Alien Romance, the daily comic strip
Oct. 30th, 2025 07:41 pmMeanwhile, Ella at her job as a cashier at Giant Supermarket:

Wait, soccer?! Not baseball?
Jon switched from baseball to soccer in high school, which might have seemed like a strategic move at the time, but the timing couldn't've been worse. The two professional leagues in the US folded in 1983 and 1984, and there were sparse opportunities for Americans to go pro for a good decade afterwards. MLS (Major League Soccer) had several false starts until it finally got off the ground for real in 1996.
Jon found it easier to nab a soccer scholarship than a baseball one, and he did talk to a recruiter or two. But he's a smart guy and knew he had lots of opportunities besides pro sports, so getting strung along as far as pro soccer opportunities wouldn't have devastated him. He was 22 and still playing for his university team in 1988 when the crash happened. I'm sure he didn't have pie in the sky dreams, but he did figure he'd someday be a washed-up former player with working legs, rather than one without.
I think I mentioned the missing part of this plotline before - Ella got hired as a cashier by Giant Supermarket, and Jon was offered a less desirable position, so he called the accounting office and ultimately landed a job there.
My apologies to anyone named Jeremy.
