"What's your idea of the perfect number of children?" Cathy asks Maurice. They've been married for five months at this point, and living together for over a year, so this is hopefully not the first time they've discussed plans for family-making.
"Four," says Maurice. He was an only child in a farming community, so it takes him a moment to realize that four kids might sound like a lot for a city girl. He corrects himself: "Two beautiful girls, like you and your sister Lydie. I'd be happy with 10 or 20 kids if they're all exactly like you. But that's not my call. And it'd be very expensive."
He's being a little disingenuous. Number of kids isn't exactly what's on the forefront of his mind.
