Backstory time! Longtime readers will know this already, so this one's for the newbies.

Ren and Maurice live in a 4th floor walkup attic apartment, and it only has one bedroom. So in the very first scene of the book, Maurice is making his bedroom in the crawlspace. When Cathy moves in, she sleeps in the crawlspace too. She's not real happy about it. She doesn't complain much, because she's toughing it out in many different ways (in one scene she complains to her sister about American food, and before that, she's cynically eyeing the Froot Loops Ren offers her).

She finally had enough here.

Maurice did ask Ren a couple of times if he and Cathy could have the bedroom, but Ren always says no.

Study group is a fixture from early on, too. It used to be at the Sievers' house. Even though Jon had dropped out of school, Ella refused to leave him unattended, so everyone came to their house. Maurice even joined study group and started writing a novel. But his primary role was as Jon's home health aide, and Ella paid him extra to cook dinner.

Now that Jon has graduated and joined the workforce, and Ella only takes a part-time courseload, study group has died. Aw. Ren's going to need one to keep him on track. He's smart enough, but not very disciplined, and Christine isn't here anymore for him to compete with.
