Mundanities 11/11

gs_silvaHappy 11/11! In China it's Couples Day. In the US it's Veterans' Day. In my household it's Free Day, which is what my mother and I have been calling any day she's not at her senior program but the rest of the family is at work/school. As in, "We're free to do whatever we want today!" We're not always. We're beholden to my energy levels and her diminishing independence.
I was scrolling through my gardening feeds and found a reference to someone's "When I get to it" garden beds. I like that term. I might start using it. I have several garden beds that qualify.
Kid started riflery yesterday. He's ranked #4 on the team. I'm kind of amused at his involvement - he made the team 2 years ago after having never held a gun in his life, and most of the team is comprised of international students and other definitely-not-MAGAs. The captain and team superstar last year was a diminutive Indian girl. She graduated, as did their other superstar, so this year will be a rebuilding year. I've had to explain 'rebuilding' to my kid. He doesn't naturally think in terms of transitions. Things are how they are at the moment, and I don't think that way at all. Everything's a timeline to me; a WIP.
Looking forward to another low-key holiday season. I got accustomed to no-big-deal holiday celebrations when we lived in Asia, and Western holidays all got barely a nod (and maybe a holiday special deal at an expat-owned restaurant) (we got into the habit of going to a certain Mexican joint in Shanghai for their Thanksgiving buffet) and greeting emails to family members. We might end up going to a big Thanksgiving event at the in-laws and the in-laws' in-laws, but that shouldn't be too bad, and I'll insist on leaving when my mother feels done, which might be before pie. We'll see. I will find a way to have some pie this season. It should be easier than similar quests in China and Vietnam.
(In Saigon, we got lucky. There was a little café run by a language tutoring group, that basically hired their students to be the baristas so they could practice their English while making a small income, and that café served pie. It wasn't cheap. I used to take the kid there and order one piece to share, which was fine at first, but later I had to grab a mouthful of pie quickly before he inhaled the entire piece.)
